Zanzibar

Zanzibar was established by Iranian immigrants from Shiraz. Its name derives from the Persian phrase 'zangi bar,' meaning 'coast of the blacks.' The island was under Portuguese rule from 1503 to 1698, after which it came under the control of the Sultanate of Oman.
In 1840, Sultan Said bin Sultan Al-Busaid of Oman moved the capital of his sultanate from Muscat in Oman to Stone Town on the island. Following his death in 1856, his sons fought for power, leading to the division of the sultanate into Zanzibar and Oman on April 6, 1861. The sixth son, Seyyid Majid bin Said Al-Busaid (1834-1870), became the Sultan of Zanzibar, while the third son, Seyyid Thuwaini bin Said Al-Said, became the Sultan of Oman.
The island sultanate was semi-colonialized between 1890 and 1963, governed by appointed British ministers and governors. On December 10, 1963, the island was granted independence and became a constitutional monarchy under Sultan rule. However, this period was short-lived, as the government was overthrown on January 12, 1964, and on April 26, 1964, it became an autonomous part of Tanzania.
